From Stereotypes to Stratosphere

The project is an audio documentary that weaves together oral histories of America's first female astronauts. It includes [in order] Anna Fisher, Kathryn Sullivan, Rhea Seddon, Carolyn Huntoon and Sally Ride. Carolyn Huntoon was not an astronaut, but was part of NASA's selection committee as well as the unofficial mentor of the 1978 female astronauts. The oral histories were conducted by NASA between 1996 and 2011 and are part of Johnson Space Center's Oral History Project. The audio documentary highlights the women's entry into the space program and examines the gender dynamics of their new positions. This piece will hopefully serve as a vehicle to reawaken public understanding of these women's
